SAVANNAH – Mary Martha Striplin, 79, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at home under the care of Hospice Savannah, after a 22-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born in Haralson County, Georgia, March 1, 1932, the daughter of C.C. and Vela B. Fielder. She was a graduate of Mt. Zion High School, Mt. Zion, GA, and was briefly employed by AT&T.
She was the devoted wife of Newman F. Striplin, Jr. for 57 years and raised their family in five states while Newman was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corp. She is survived by her husband and three daughters: Susan Evans Tim of Louisville, KY, Janet Schroeder David B. of Evergreen, CO, and Amy Duncan Ron of Austin, TX. She was also the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Emily, Katherine, David C., Jonathan and Elizabeth Schroeder and Darby, Harrison, and Ryan Duncan. She is also survived by two brothers: Gerald of Bowdon, GA and Lester Risa of Marietta, GA; and one sister, Helen Litchfield Jack of Carrollton, GA. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Doris and C.C., Jr. Beth.
Martha was a member of PEO chapter AL, docent at the Davenport House, member of the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church and member of the church choir. She loved gardening, reading, golfing, taking care of her family and enjoying the many friends she made over the 20 years of living on Skidaway Island.
A memorial service will be held at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Fund, Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411.
